The first step in the mediation process, is to attend a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This is an opportunity for you to find out more about mediation and for the mediator to gain an understanding of your situation and background.
Since a change in the law in April 2014, there is a requirement for individuals to consider whether mediation can help resolve issues, before taking your case to court. You will need to show that you have attended an initial session to explore if mediation can help you (unless there are special circumstances which give you an exemption). Even if you have gone to court previously, or are in the middle or court proceedings, mediation can help resolve on-going issues or disputes.
Mediation is not always suitable for all cases and if you need help from other support services, we can provide you with details and further information.
